Tournament of Champions

The season is officially underway with the Tournament of Champions hosted by Tuscarora High School in Frederick Maryland. The Cougars got off to a great start on the season, winning both their games. In the first game the Cougars defeated the Governor Thomas Johnson Patriots by the score of 3-2. the Cougars second game later that afternoon saw victory over the Patriots of Northern High School from Calvert County, 1-0.

It was a great day for goals from restarts as Senior Midfielder Yvonne Latour scored 1 goal in each game from a direct free kick. Yvonne also had a run of play goal in the game against Thomas Johnson on a lovely cross from Sophomore forward Ally Solomon, which was buried into the back of the net off the right foot of Latour. The third goal in the Thomas Johnson game came from Senior forward Ele Margelos who had a very well placer shot into the upper corner of the net. The Thomas Johnson game was played on a very wet and slow field and at times the passing was a bit untidy. The girls struggled to adjust but by half time and all during the second half looked to have made the adjustments necessary to control the passing and possession. Emily looked very good in her usual defensive midfield spot and had some very good runs with the ball and was her typical great passing self. She had a few great balls through to the forwards who couldn't quite seem to find the back of the net. Good control of the midfield and plenty of balls out of the air off her head as well.

In the afternoon game against the Patriots (what a coincidence!) of Northern High School the Cougars had much better control of the field and had the majority of possession. The grass was much faster than in the morning and everything seemed to be going much easier for the girls. Play was well controlled by the defense and midfield and there were some wonderful runs and beautiful balls through to the forwards. The lone goal came in the 16th minute of the second half from Latour's second direct strike. A foul just outside the Northern Patriot's penalty box and Yvonne squirted the ball past the Northern keeper. More of the same from Em in the second game, with all her play in her usual spot. Very slow game all around as all participants were very tired from the morning game. One of the best opportunities for a run of play goal was in the 37th minute of the second half where Em pushed a ball through to Ally who passed it to Ele and Ele just sent it just high over the cross bar.

A great start to the season as the Cougars record stands at 2-0-0. Were have an away game against Urbana High School on Thursday the 10th at 5 p.m. The Cougars begin their home campaign Monday the 14th at Quince Orchard Stadium against Rockville High School also at 5 p.m.
